Mahrez: Player of the Year

Riyad Mahrez looks set to make it a year to remember after scooping the 2016 PFA Player of the Year Award on his way to possibly helping Leicester win the most unlikely of Premier League titles.

Mahrez and sidekick Jamie Vardy have each been directly involved in a staggering 28 league goals this term, while receiving admirable support from a host of other memorable performers: Wes Morgan, Danny Drinkwater and N'golo Kante to name but a few.

After yesterday's resounding 4-0 win over Swansea at a rocking King Power Stadium, the Foxes stand on the cusp of history with just three games left.

Rags to riches striker Vardy has scored 22 goals and assisted on six occasions, but his Premier League peers chose to hand the coveted PFA award to the left-footed Algerian lighting up the top flight.

Mahrez' blend of fine passing, superb goals and an unerring ability to glide past defenders have impressed players, pundits and fans alike, and moments such as his hat-trick against Swansea and an effort against Chelsea, which left Cesar Azpilicueta dazed and confused, will live long in the memory.

Mahrez lies fifth in the Premier League top scorers list with 17 goals, and joint third in terms of assists (of which he has 11). His incredible campaign is, therefore, underlined by the fact that he is the only player to reach double figures for goals and assists this term.

When you think of the fine array of African footballers to grace the Premier League, Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba to name a couple, it is fitting that we now have a Player of the Year from a continent that has richly enhanced the English game.

Although he now already has silverware on the mantelpiece, there is surely no doubt that Mahrez has just one medal in mind. Eight points ahead of Tottenham, the Foxes' only serious challengers for the title, Mahrez could in fact win the league next weekend at Old Trafford should Spurs slip up against West Brom tonight.

What surprises has the Premier League finale got in store for a player renowned for his own twists and turns?
