French star could land unwanted mantle

Reds setting wrong kind of records

He may be a shining light at Old Trafford, but Anthony Martial may finish this season with the lowest Premier League goal total of any Man United topscorer.

With Leicester City and Tottenham rightly hogging the headlines as the Premier League nears its climax, United are one of several top flight giants trailing in their wake.

Stunned by the emergence of this season's upstarts,  Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea and Louis Van Gaal's Red Devils - the most successful Premier League side of all - have stumbled through difficult campaigns.

While Jamie Vardy (22 goals) and Harry Kane (24) have registered the most goals in a single Premier League campaign for their respective clubs, who have both bagged record goal hauls this season, Martial and co have struggled to hit the net for the shotshy Mancunians.

In the FA Cup final they may be, but United are close to writing the wrong kind of history under the prickly Van Gaal.

With just 42 PL goals scored so far this season, 16 short of their worst-ever Prem season in front of goal, Footballzz has taken a quick look at the 'Class of 15/16' and how it compares with its more free-scoring counterparts.

To cut right to the chase: FA Cup hero Martial is Utd's top Premier League goal scorer with a staggeringly modest eight goals!

The Frenchman subsequently looks set to become United's lowest top scorer in PL history, unless he can conjure up four goals in his last four matches to overtake the 11 goals scored back in 2004/05 by Wayne Rooney.

England captain Rooney has the misfortune of having the two lowest Premier League goal tallies at Old Trafford, his 12 strikes last term only fractionally better than his record low in 04/05.

However, lets not finish on a Rooney downer, as the Three Lions' record goalscorer has logged two of the best tallies for United in the Premier League, only Cristiano Ronaldo's 31 beating his best of 27.

His virtuoso performance in the semi-final win over Everton in the cup suggests Martial could plunder the goals necessary to avoid setting a new low. Rooney, meanwhile, only trails Martial by one Premier League goal (he is currently on 7), so a late goal glut from a striker looking for form ahead of Euro 2016 could also save the day.

It is fair to say that, whatever happens, 2015/16 has been far from a vintage year in front of goal for the Red Devils.
