An opportunistic early goal by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang clinched victory for Arsenal against 10-man Watford and sent them up to fourth place in the Premier League table.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Arsenal the lead inside ten minutes after Ben Foster's attempted goal kick came off his leg at close range and ended up in the back of the net.
Just a minute later, Watford captain Deeney was sent off for throwing his forearm into the face of Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira in a late challenge.
Despite playing with 10 men for 80 minutes, Watford offered the far greater threat, hitting the bar through Adam Masina's powerful drive from distance in the second half, and forcing Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno into a number of excellent saves.
Arsenal held on for their first away clean sheet of the campaign to retake fourth spot, level on 66 points with Chelsea with a match in hand.
The end to Watford's three-match winning sequence at home keeps them in 10th, on 46 points.
