Micky van de Ven netted his first goal for his team as 10-man Tottenham Hotspur secure a narrow 1-0 victory against Luton at Kenilworth Road, which propelled them to the summit of the Premier League.
Spurs had a strong start with three clear opportunities to take the lead within the first eight minutes as Richarlison in two occasions and Pedro Porro failed to make the most of big openings.
Dejan Kulusevski had a chance to score and break the deadlock, but his shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.
As the game progressed, Luton gradually withstood the intense pressure from Spurs. The Hatters had a goal disallowed due to a foul in the build-up, with Tom Lockyer being the culprit.
Luton's hopes were boosted just before half-time when Yves Bissouma received a red card. The midfielder had previously received a yellow card for a cynical foul on the halfway line and was subsequently shown a second yellow for diving.
Despite being reduced to ten men, it was Ange Postecoglou's team that eventually took the lead in the 52nd minute.
James Maddison showcased some skill on the sideline and delivered a cross that was neatly tucked away by Van de Ven, marking his first goal for Tottenham.
The hosts continued to pose a threat throughout the second half, but Jacob Brown and Alfie Doughty couldn't find the finishing touch, and Postecoglou's men held on for the win.
As a result of the victory, Spurs now have 20 points and lead the Premier League table going into the weekend's matches. Second-placed Man City will face third-placed Arsenal on Sunday, while Luton remains in 17th place.
After the international break, Rob Edwards' men will return to Premier League action against Nottingham Forest, while Tottenham will host Fulham.
