Brentford once again enjoyed their trip to Stamford Bridge with Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo on target in a clinical win.
It could have been a very different story for Mauricio Pochettino’s team had they taken some of their early chances.
Noni Madueke could have put Chelsea ahead with what would have been a super curling effort but the 21-year-old’s effort bounced back off of Mark Flekken’s crossbar.
Marc Cucurella also had two good chances to put the Blues ahead in the first half but didn’t have the clinical touch to beat Flekken.
Despite a promising opening 45 minutes for the home side, it was Brentford who opened the scoring with just under an hour played in the game.
Thomas Frank’s team improved after the restart and took the lead when Bryan Mbeumo sent a cross into the area from near the byline on the right. The ball floated over until Ethan Pinnock met it with his head at the far post.
Chelsea tried to get back into the game but were up against a determined Bees’ defence although they were lucky to remain with 11 players after Moisés Caicedo’s studs-up challenge on Christian Norgaard earned only a yellow card when it could easily have been a red.
Brentford eventually sealed all three points right at the death. Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez went forward to attack a Chelsea corner but it was Brentford who came away with the ball.
Neal Maupay was away with only empty space and an open goal ahead of him, the Frenchman generously laid the ball on to Mbeumo who had the easiest of finishes to make it 2-0 on the day.
