We have around a month of the season to go across Europe’s major leagues with the second-legs of quarter-finals in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League taking place this week.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez suggested that his teammate Ollie Watkins should be the Premier League Player of the Year this season as he notched his 19th league goal of the campaign at the weekend in Villa’s 2-0 defeat of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
With that in mind, this is a look at the players with the most direct goal involvements across the Bundesliga, La Liga, Ligue 1, Premier League, Primeira Liga and Serie A in the 2023/24 campaign thus far…
*Players with over 25+ direct goal involvements
So, just 11 players across Europe’s so-called ‘big six’ European leagues have managed 25 combined goals and assists so far this season as we head into the ‘run in’.
Interestingly, of those 11, three of them are Englishmen but two of those three Englishmen may not yet even be a part of Gareth Southgate’s 23-man squad for UEFA EURO 2024, let alone involved in the starting eleven for the Three Lions.
Of the three players to have had 30 direct goal involvements, two of them are set to be on the move this summer with Kylian Mbappe expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer, whilst Viktor Gyokeres is heavily linked with a move away from Sporting, albeit for a hefty price tag.
Ollie Watkins’ aforementioned goal at the Emirates on Sunday means he is now three goal involvements clear of any other attacker in the Premier League with the former Brentford man having 29 goals and assists this season in the league.
