Struggling Ajax have appointed former player and Greece manager John van 't Schip as head coach with the club currently bottom of the league.
Hedwiges Maduro had taken charge of first team duties following the sacking of Maurice Steijn but wasn’t able to reverse the Dutch side’s fortunes with Ajax losing away to Brighton and PSV Eindhoven in their last two games.
That 5-2 defeat to PSV on Sunday has left the club rock bottom of the Eredivisie after having won just one of their opening eight games – losing five of them.
Now the club have appointed John van 't Schip to help avoid the ultimate humiliation of relegation with Michael Valkanis to join as his assistant while Maduro returns to his previous role as an assistant coach.
“I'm very happy that the deal is done and I'm eager to start at the club where it once all began for me,” the 59-year-old said on his appointment.
“The conversations with all the people involved resulted in a great feeling for me. Ajax needs to find the way up again and I'm happy to help in that matter.”
Van’t Schip’s first game in charge will be this Wednesday when his side host FC Volendam.
