Chelsea beat Villarreal 6-5 in a penalty shootout to lift the Uefa Super Cup in Belfast, after the game finished 1-1 after regular and extra time.
The Action: Thomas Tuchel's men took the lead first just before the half-hour mark as Hakim Ziyech broke in at the far post to connect to Kai Havertz's cut-back cross.
After Chelsea's goal, the Yellow Submarine reacted well and were close to levelling just before half-time, when Gerard Moreno crossed for former Liverpool Albert Moreno, but his left-foot volley clattered the bar, then bounced down and out.
In the second-half, Unai Emery's side kept pushing for to score and looked the better side throughout the second period. Villarreal got their deserved equaliser in the 75th minute when Gerard Moreno blasted past Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy after a clever back-heel assist from Boulaye Dia.
The game went to extra-time, and in this period the Blues were more dangerous than the Spanish side, but the game ended 1-1 after the 120 minutes with the game having to be decided by a penalty shootout. Chelsea boss Tuchel made a big and decisive call at this point bringing on Kepa for Mendy.
Despite Kai Havertz failing to score the first penalty, Kepa saved once from Aïssa Mandi and then kept out Raúl Albiol's spot kick, after Antonio Rudiger had converted, to hand Chelsea the win in a dramatic 6-5 shootout win.
Big Picture: The victory will give a big boost of confidence to Chelsea ahead of the forthcoming season. The European champions added another cup to their trophy room and will now turn their attention to the Premier League. The Blues host Crystal Palace on Saturday on Premier League's opening matchday.
Memorable Moment: Thomas Tuchel gambled and brought on Kepa at the end of extra time to replace Edouard Mendy. The Spanish goalkeeper put on the cape and turned into Chelsea's hero by saving two penalties and helping the Londoners get their hands on the UEFA Super Cup.
Stat of the Day: The Champions League winners have now won the UEFA Super Cup in eight of the last nine seasons.
