Morecambe promoted to League One for the first time

Morecambe have been promoted to League One for the first time in their history after beating Newport County 1-0 after extra-time in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

The Action: The first half lacked any real opportunities with both teams prioritising their defensive set-up, but controversy wasn't far away. Newport thought they had a big claim for a penalty after Shrimps' goalie Kyle Letheren caught the face of Scott Bennett when he was trying to punch a long throw clear, but the referee disagreed.

In the second-half, it remained the same with both teams more afraid of losing then actually trying to win the game. The only moment of real danger was Newport's Liam Shephard's low drive from 20 yards which was well saved by Letheren.

The extra 30 minutes were inevitable and the Shrimps finally found the breakthrough in the second period of extra time. John O'Sullivan was brought down by Ryan Haynes and, despite suggestions it may have been outside the box, referee Robert Madley gave the penalty.

From the spot, Carlos Gomes secured the win for the Shrimps sending Morecambe to League One for the first time in their history.

Man of the Match: Carlos Gomes. Not just because he scored the most important goal in Morecambe's history, but because of his influence in this Shrimps' historic promotion.
