Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 700th goal of his club career after coming on as a first-half substitute for the injured Anthony Martial in Manchester United’s 2-1 win against Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League.
Everton had a brilliant start and took the lead within five minutes as Alex Iwobi curled a fantastic effort past David de Gea from outside the box, after Casemiro, in his first Premier League start, gave the ball away and the Nigerian pounced on the Brazilian's error.
However United had a strong reaction and levelled 10 minutes later as punished a mistake from Idrissa Gueye with Anthony Martial finding Antony, who fired past Jordan Pickford to score his third goal in as many Premier League matches for the Red Devils since joining from Ajax.
Martial, who picked up a hip injury in the warmup, was substituted around the half hour mark for Cristiano Ronaldo.
And it was the substitute Ronaldo who put United ahead after a quick counter-attack, with a low drilled finish from Casemiro's through-ball beat Pickford at his near post.
In the second half, both teams had their moments but neither created a clear chance.
Marcus Rashford thought he sealed victory for Erik ten Hag's mennine minutes from time, but but it was controversially ruled out by VAR for a handball in the build-up.
In the last seconds of stoppage time, de Gea with a world class save from James Garner's effort handed United a much important win for the Mancunians.
With this result, Man Utd climb to fifth in the Premier League table while the Toffees are 12th.
Next up, Man Utd host Omonia in the Europa League on Thursday, before they are back at Old Trafford to face Newcastle on Sunday, while Everton travel to London to face Tottenham next Saturday evening.
