Wrexham v Notts County: Game of the season?

This afternoon's match between league leaders Notts County and second-placed Wrexham at the Racehorse Ground has all the makings of a National League classic.

After their respective matches on Good Friday, Notts County and Wrexham are only separated by goal difference, with the Magpies having played one more game than the Red Dragons.

Phil Parkinson's men had already surpassed the 100-point tally in the National League this season before their surprise 3-1 defeat at mid-table Halifax Town on Friday.

Although, the Welsh side got off to the perfect start away at Halifax, with Elliott Lee scoring just after the half-hour mark, they were unable to maintain their lead in the second half, conceding a brace from Millenic Alli and a late goal from Emmanuel Dieseruvwe.

Notts, on the other hand, capitalised on Wrexham's loss by securing a 3-0 home win against Wealdstone to overtake the Welsh side on goal difference and claim top spot.

Macaulay Langstaff extended his impressive scoring record by finding the back of the net for the 41st time this season, breaking the National League goal record for a single campaign, previously set by Ricky Miller for Dover Athletic in 2016-17 (40).

Both sides are putting the fifth tier of English football on the map with the National League's profile and exposure at an unprecedented level and with just one automatic promotion place to the English Football League up for grabs. It seems unfair that one of Wrexham and Notts County may not be promoted this season.

Now on 100 points for the season, BOTH title rivals are odds on to break the National League record for points won in a single campaign, which currently stands at 105 and was set by Crawley Town during their title-winning 2010-11 season.

Add in to that, they are both on 106 goals scored and have already exceeded the previous National League record for goals scored in a single season, a record previously jointly-held by Barnet in 1990-91 and Hereford in 2003-04 with 103 goals.

It is unfortunate that only one team will secure automatic promotion to the EFL, but the stage is set for an exciting encounter that is likely to help settle one of the best National League seasons ever. Tune in live at 3pm on BT Sport 1.
