FA Cup: Liverpool win Merseyside derby and qualify to the final (2-1)

The FA Cup 2011/2012, Liverpool, Everton | 2012-04-14 15:33

Liverpool have qualified to the FA Cup finals, thanks to an Andy Carroll winner in the late stages of the Merseyside derby at Wembley, while Everton were left behind.

Even though Kenny Dalglish’s men were the ones to dominate possession during the first-half, it was Everton the ones who gained the lead, thanks to a Nikica Jelavic opener in the 24th minute.

Therefore, while Liverpool failed to reach the equalizer before the end of the first 45 minutes, their neighbour rivals had one foot in the finals by halftime, as the Reds would have to improve their act in the second-half, in order to keep their hopes of claiming a trophy in the 2011-12 season alive.

The Anfield Road outfit did return more forceful in the second period, as they did manage to reach the equalizer thanks to a Luis Suarez effort, at 61 minutes. The Uruguayan latched on before sliding the ball past Howard, bringing the competition back to Wembley.

As the end of the match approached, it was becoming more evident that the team which managed to reach the goal score again would be the one to progress to semi-finals and the nerves on both sides started to pile up.

Therefore, it was an eager Andy Carroll who offered the qualification to Liverpool, as he put his team on the lead just three minutes before the referee’s final whistle, at 87’, as the Reds progressed to the FA Cup final, while Everton were bitterly eliminated after displaying a great act.
