Manchester City grabbed a last minute win against Villarreal (2-1) and celebrated their first victory ever in the Champions League.
Mancini’s debut season with City certainly hadn’t been as hoped as the Blues failed to win in the first two matches. But in Manchester, Villarreal, who scored first by Cani with an early 4’ goal, couldn’t get any point.
An own goal by Marchena at 43’ gave an oxygen mask for the Citizens as they went to half-time and after a goalless 45 minutes, a 90+3’ goal by Aguero flooded the Etihad with the taste of the first three Champions League points at the club.
This result doesn’t take City away from the 3rd place in the table, with four points, but it is crucial not to let leaders Bayern Munich and Napoli to get further away to the knockout stage. Villarreal are yet to score a point in Champions League Group A.
Bayern and Napoli draw and help Citizens
It was a perfect round for Mancini’s side, as rivals Bayern Munich and Napoli drawed in Italy (1-1). The German side could have made a huge step into the knockout stage if they could have held the advantage from the early 2’ goal by Tony Kroos.
Six minutes before break, a Badstuber own goal ruined it for the Germans, who remain, however, in the lead, with seven points, followed by the Italians, with five.
